Chizik Unhappy With Start Of Two-A-Days

Comments from Auburn's head coach plus news and notes from Tuesday's football practice are featured.

Auburn, Ala.--For the first time this preseason, Coach Gene Chizik fussed after practice about what he saw from his football team.

Following the first part of the first day of two-a-days, Chizik said the session was "not good at all."

"I thought they were trying to pace themselves to get through to the second one, which is very discouraging," Chizik said. "I thought their focus was not there. I thought they tried to be physical and do some things when it comes to playing with effort, but the mental part was not there. We have got to get better at that."

Chizik said the team has players trying to step up as leaders, but added, "There are not enough of them now." Chizik added he hopes the Tigers have enough pride to improve at the evening practice.

On Wednesday the Tigers are scheduled to have their first preseason scrimmage. Chizik said the plan is to put the players into enough different situations to get a read on who the first, second and third string players should be.

Chizik said the scrimmage will be "huge" in helping determine the pecking order at quarterback where junior Barrett Trotter, sophomore Clint Moseley and freshman Kiehl Frazier are competing for playing time. The head coach said the players have been dividing the reps evenly in practice.

In other news:

*Freshman Erique Florence is off to a good start in preseason. The former Valley High star had three interceptions in Wednesday's first practice.

Erique Florence is pushing for playing time at safety.

*High school All-American Kris Frost, who is having to watch practice in a sling after injurying his shoulder in the preseason, could be cleared to practice in December if the Tigers are preparing for a bowl game. The plans are to redshirt the high school All-American from Butler High in Matthews, N.C.

*Offensive tackles A.J. Greene and Aubrey Phillips have not yet been cleared to practice due to injury issues, but neither is expected to be out for a long time.

*Walk-on Logan Paul re-joined the team on Tuesday to give the Tigers five quarterbacks in camp along with fellow walk-on Wirth Campbell, a true freshman from Ensworth High in Nashville. Paul is from Gulf Shores High School and was the third quarterback in spring drills. He took the open spot on the 105-man roster vacated when walk-on receiver Cody Frederick decided to leave the team.

Cody Parkey is shown in Tuesday's practice with Ryan White, his holder. Parkey is off to a good start in preseason with his field goals, according to special teams coach, Jay Boulware.

*The Tigers will return to practice for the second session of the day on Tuesday. They will have their first scrimmage on Wednesday.

*Chizik said that redshirt freshman fullback Ladarious Phillips has been inconsistent in practice and has a long way to go from being ready to contribute. He is a huge fullback at 6-0, 290 pounds. Auburn's coaches wanted him to drop weight in the offseason, but he has not done that."
