Pat's Picks: Coach Dye's SEC Predictions

Coach Pat Dye predicts who is going to win this week's SEC contests plus other college football games.

Editor's Note: College Football Hall of Fame coach Pat Dye returns to Inside the Auburn Tigers and AUTigers.com for his second season of his Pat's Picks column sponsored by Ware's Jewlers. The coach will forecast the winners for SEC games and other college football matchups of interest around the nation.

Mississippi State at Memphis--Memphis State is still rebuilding so Mississippi State shouldn't have much trouble in this game.

Ware Jewelers

Kentucky vs. Western Kentucky at LP Field, Nashville--It doesn't matter where they are playing this game. Kentucky or any team in the SEC should win with ease vs. Western Kentucky.

Kent State at Alabama--This should be no contest for Alabama.

BYU at Ole Miss--This one could be interesting. Both teams had disappointing seasons last year. I will go with Ole Miss since they are playing in Oxford, but it should be close. BYU's personnel can change dramatically in a year's time when they get players back on campus from their missions.

Montana at Tennessee--Tennessee should win without too much trouble vs. the Grizzlies.

Missouri State at Arkansas--This should be another easy opener for an SEC team.

Florida Atlantic at Florida--Will Muschamp will pick up his first victory as a head coach. The Gators lost a lot of good players from last year's team, but they shouldn't have any problem with Florida Atlantic.

East Carolina at South Carolina--This matchup should be a solid test for South Carolina, but I am sure the Gamecocks will win this one in Columbia.

Elon at Vanderbilt--Vandy will pick up a win for its new head coach, James Franklin.

Oregon vs. LSU at Cowboys Stadium, Arlington, Tex.--I am interested to see how LSU comes out and plays with all that has been going on there recently. I think how Oregon performs is a whole lot more predictable than what to expect from LSU, but I am going with Les Miles and the Tigers in what should be one of the most watched games of the first week of the season.

Boise State vs. Georgia at the Georgia Dome--Playing in Atlanta is an advantage for Georgia and I like the SEC team to win this one.

Quarterback Barrett Trotter will make his first college start as the 2010 national champion Auburn Tigers play Utah State out of the Western Athletic Conference on Saturday.

Utah State at Auburn--I don't think we will see a lot of different things from Auburn with the X's and O's in this game compared to last year, but we will see a lot of new faces playing for the Tigers. The coaches are going to play as many young guys as they can to see how they are going to respond under game conditions.

It will be a very interesting game from an Auburn standpoint to see what happens with so many new starters on the field. There are going to be a lot of eyes on quarterback Barrett Trotter as well as the offensive line to see how they play. The same is true of a rebuilt defense.

As a former head coach I think a game like this is more anticipated and fun to watch than when you have a talented and veteran team coming back and you know what to expect. We really don't know how Auburn is going to perform on Saturday vs. Utah State, but I expect the Tigers to win.

In other games:

*Notre Dame over South Florida

*Virginia Tech over Appalachian State

*Clemson over Troy

*Texas Tech over Texas State

*Oklahoma over Tulsa

*West Virginia over Marshall

*Maryland over Miami.
