Tigers Top Aggies for NCAA Soccer Victory

The Auburn soccer Tigers opened NCAA Tournament play with a victory over Utah State.

Auburn, Ala.--All-SEC senior Katy Frierson scored her ninth goal of the season and Tori Ball added the other as Auburn advanced to the second round of the 2011 NCAA Women's Soccer Championship with a 2-1 win over Utah State on Saturday night.

The Tigers improved to 15-6-2 as they advance to a second round match on Friday vs. Maryland. That game will be played in Stillwater, Okla.

Frierson, the SEC Tournament MVP, started the scoring 17 minutes into the action with a shot into the upper right corner of the goal.

Ball's goal 12 minutes into the second half put the Tigers up 2-0. The freshman chested a header from Kim Spence before scoring her fourth goal of the season.

Utah State, the WAC Tournament champion, scored its only goal with 26:54 remaining. The Aggies ended their season with a 15-5-2 record.

"First, I'll say that Utah State played a great game," Auburn coach Karen Hoppa said. "They gave themselves a chance to win the game late by scoring a good goal. That is a real quality team that we beat tonight.

"I thought we scored two world-class goals," Hoppa added. "The individual efforts by Katie Frierson and Tori Ball were tremendous. That was the difference in the game."
