With Auburn a coach short on its staff, Gene Chizik, who served as defensive coordinator at Auburn, Central Florida and Texas before becoming a head coach, said on Thursday that he will take over as interim defensive coordinator until he does his "due diligence" and hires a replacement. Chizik is expected to coach the Tigers vs. Virginia in the Chick-fil-A Bowl on New Year's Eve.
Chizik said plans are still being made on who will coach linebackers when the Tigers start practice on Monday. He also hasn't decided who will replace Roof as an on the road recruiter.
UCF announced on Thursday that Roof had joined Coach George O'Leary's staff in Orlando.
"I really enjoyed my time at Auburn," Roof told Inside the Auburn Tigers." It is a great university and it is a great place to raise a family. I enjoyed being a part of the coaching staff and the opportunity to coach a great group of young men at Auburn.
"Being on the coaching staff for the national championship season last year was very special to me and it is something that I will always remember," Roof added. "I appreciate the opportunity to be a part of that and I am looking forward to this new opportunity that is waiting for me at Central Florida."
Auburn coach Gene Chizik said on Thursday, "Ted has played an important role in the success of our football program, helping Auburn win 29 games in three years, including a national championship last season."
"I'm very appreciative of the passion, energy and work ethic Ted brought to the program every day," Chizik said. "I know that this will be a great opportunity for Ted to be reunited with his mentor in George O'Leary and we wish him and his family nothing but the best at UCF."
"It's a wonderful opportunity to come to a great place," Roof said on Thursday in Orlando. "It's just as important to come work for a coach who I have tremendous respect for. He gave me my first break as a coordinator in football, and I think it says a lot about how I feel about Coach."
