Tiger Tailback Trying To Be Tougher

Corey Grant talks about Auburn's spring football practice and his developed at tailback.

Auburn, Ala.--For the Auburn football team's offense in the second scrimmage, there were not a lot of highlights, but one came from walk-on running back Corey Grant who has been consistently performing well this spring.

The tailback showed a combination of power and speed on a touchdown run of 18 yards on Saturday at Jordan-Hare Stadium during a scrimmage in which the defense held the upper hand most of the way.

Asked about that run the former Opelika High standout said, "It was an A gap play. The line did a good job. I was able to bounce off a couple of tacklers and I ended up in the end zone."

After the scrimmage, players on both sides of the football talked about the need to improve as the Tigers head into the stretch run of spring training. That was particularly the case with the offensive players.

"I think the scrimmage went pretty good," Grant said. "I saw some improvements, but I saw a lot of room for improvements."

Asked if he believes the offense has made progress in picking up the new system being installed by new coordinator Scot Loeffler, Grant said, "Yes, I do. I think we have improved a lot, but the next three days are going to be hard practices and we have a lot of room to get better."

The Tigers are scheduled to practice Monday, Wednesday and Friday prior to the annual spring A-Day Game, which will kick off at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Grant, a sprint champion in track as a high school athlete, was known more than his speed on the football field than his toughness as a power runner. He noted that he is determined to do something about that.

Asked if he believes he has improved his toughness as a runner, Grant said, "I think I have...actually I know I?have. That was a goal for me as a college football player this year. I think I have done that."

Commenting on what he has done to become a tougher back, the redshirt sophomore said, "It is really just a mental thing. The physical part comes from being in the weight room and working hard, but for the most part I think it is a mental thing."
