Tigers Stumble As League Race Tightens

Auburn dropped three to Alabama over the weekend to fall back in the pack in the SEC race.

Auburn, Ala.—After three successful weekends to open SEC play, the Auburn Tigers (17-14, 6-6) stumbled and fell flat in a three-game sweep at the hands of last-place Alabama. Now back to .500 in league play with series still remaining against South Carolina, Arkansas and Florida among others, the Tigers will have an uphill battle to make a postseason run this year.

Winning close games had been the recipe for success for the Tigers this season, but mistakes turned close games into losses against Alabama over the weekend. Walks and errors highlighted the problems for the Tigers as they kept giving Alabama opportunities until they succeeded.

With a trip to Vanderbilt coming up this weekend, Auburn is looking to do something they haven't done in quite some time in Nashville and that is win a series. The Tigers are 3-9 at Vanderbilt the last four trips and haven't won a series against the Commodores on the road since 2001.

Who's Hot?—That's an easy call in the SEC right now as the LSU Tigers have been on fire. Winning eight of their last nine games, the Tigers have series wins over Arkansas and Florida the last two weekends and have vaulted back into the Top 10.

Who's Not?—Auburn's fundamentals. Auburn allowed 20 runs to Alabama in three games last weekend and 11 of them scored after a walk, an error, or a hit batter. Those are the things that teams can't do and still win baseball games in the Southeastern Conference.

On Deck—Auburn will face Samford Tuesday night at Plainsman Park looking for some revenge. On March 27 Auburn gave up a grand slam in the bottom of the ninth to fall to the Bulldogs 8-5 in Birmingham.
