Huge Week Has Tigers Back In The Race

Auburn's 4-0 week has the Tigers tied for fifth in the SEC Standings heading to Georgia this coming weekend.

Auburn, Ala.—A perfect 4-0 week, including a sweep of Tennessee over the weekend, has put the Auburn Tigers back very much in the hunt for postseason play through seven weeks of the SEC schedule. Currently 25-19 overall and 10-11 in conference play, the Tigers find themselves tied for fifth overall in the league and just two games behind Florida with three series remaining in the regular season.

With its best week of baseball since the 2010 season, Auburn demolished Troy on Tuesday night and swept Tennessee over the weekend by a combined score of 42-12. Against the Vols Auburn hit .406 as a team with 19 extra-base hits. On the mound the Tigers' pitching staff had an ERA of 3.33 for the weekend.

Offensive Player of the Week: Even with several outstanding performances this one is a no-brainer as catcher Blake Austin was on fire for the Tigers. Hitting .643 for the week, Austin was 7-11 for the weekend against Tennessee with 10 RBI in three games. He said the week was big for him and the team as it continues to push towards the postseason and it's mostly due to a growing confidence.

"It's night and day right now," Austin said. "I don't really know how to describe it. It's beyond words. Last week we were kind of down about the last three series and how we ended it with South Carolina. We're a completely different team, offensively, defensively, and with the pitching. With everything going on right now, it's night and day."

Pitcher of the Week: Moving out of the starting rotation may have been the best thing to happen to Derek Varnadore and the Auburn Tigers as his pitching out of the bullpen was extraordinary last week. In three appearances he earned a win and a save and allowed just one hit and no runs in eight innings of work.

On Deck: Auburn will travel to Georgia to face a team that has shown it can play with anyone. Currently 24-20 overall and 9-12 in SEC play, Georgia blew eighth-inning leads on both Friday and Saturday in Baton Rouge to LSU before winning Sunday's game to salvage a game on the road. Friday night starter Alex Wood is one of the league's best with a 5-1 record and an ERA of just 2.69 this season.
