Talented Quarterback Discusses Auburn

2013 prospect Ryan Buchanan discusses Auburn, gives his thoughts on OC Scot Loeffler, talks of his timeline for a decision, and more.

Jackson, Miss.—A quarterback prospect that has been gaining steam on the recruiting trail in recent months, 6-4, 200 Ryan Buchanan from Jackson Prep has seen a steady stream of coaches come through this spring as the evaluation period continues for schools around the country. With offers from several top schools already including Auburn, Arkansas, Mississippi State and Ole Miss, Buchanan said it has been exciting to see the flurry of activity around Jackson Prep.

"Last week we had Ole Miss, West Virginia, Mississippi State and Alabama," Buchanan tells Inside The Auburn Tigers. "Of course this week I had Auburn yesterday and Tennessee and North Carolina and Florida is on Thursday. Next week I'll find out if anyone else is coming.

"It's fun," he adds. "Since we're practicing I'm getting to throw for them too so that's good. It's cool to see a college coach walk up and down your halls. That's what Coach (Scot) Loeffler did while he was here. He was here from 11-3 and not just to see me throw. He talked to the whole faculty, I guess trying to get more information about me."

That's something that Auburn Head Coach Gene Chizik has stressed since taking over at Auburn is getting to know as much about the kids his staff recruits as possible. Auburn's new offensive coordinator, Loeffler has done the same thing since arriving on the Plains in January and Buchanan said it's neat to see someone pay so much attention to him.

"I know how Coach Loeffler feels about me and also Coach Chizik," Buchanan said. "I have a good relationship with both of them. I have talked to Coach Loeffler for a couple of months now. It makes you feel good. I'm real interested in Auburn."

Loeffler is one of the biggest reasons why Buchanan said the Tigers are one of the schools he's seriously considering. Looking for a school that he feels comfortable with and also a coordinator he feels comfortable with, Buchanan said Loeffler definitely has plenty to offer as a quarterback coach.

"I came to Auburn for a visit a few weeks ago and I definitely like Coach Loeffler," Buchanan said. "He seems like a real personable guy. He by the other day but I didn't get to hang out with him. He was just at my school. I think he's a really good quarterback coach. That's one thing he preaches to the guys he's recruiting. He's told me that.

"I think he can really coach up a quarterback," he added. "That's what he's been telling me if I decide to go play there. He seems like a good guy to work with. If you play for him you've got to be able to throw it. He's a high character guy that is trying to find out everything he can about his quarterbacks too. I think he's looking for the right thing at quarterback and I think he's a good coach."

Having already visited Auburn once, Buchanan said it's possible he may be back on the Plains later this month as the Tigers invite many top prospects to Auburn to hang out in a relaxed atmosphere. He said that's something that is intriguing to him and it's nice to be thought of as one of the guys they want in that weekend.

"There's a good chance I might be back for the Big Cat Weekend at Auburn," Buchanan said. "Coach Chizik told me he wanted me to come back for that. I don't think it's much of a Junior Day and instead it's for some of the guys they really want. You get to be around the guys they are recruiting and you can kind of match up with guys you're going to be around if you play there."

With plenty of options to choose from at the moment and still more schools he wants to learn more about, Buchanan said when the time comes to make a decision he's got several things in mind that he wants to see.

"One thing I'm looking at is the offensive coordinator and quarterback coach and my relationship with him," Buchanan said. "I want to see if that school can translate to the NFL. That's one thing that every guy dreams is to get there. I want to see if once you get to college, are you going to be coached up? I'm like most recruits in that I want a place I feel comfortable, a place you wake up every morning excited to play for the school and excited to be there."

Planning to make his decision before his senior year, Buchanan said he and his family will continue to narrow things down. While he admits he's got a short list he's working with, because he's continuing to hear from schools he's not closing off anyone at the moment.

"I have a list that I've narrowed down to a couple of schools," Buchanan said. "I'm still talking to several more schools though. Florida, Tennessee, and Alabama are a few of them. I have been thinking a lot about it lately. We have narrowed it down to about four schools and we'll see what happens.

"I'm still looking because other people are talking about offering too. I want to see how that plays out. I would definitely like to have my decision early. I would like to have it done before my season starts. My plan is to decide sometime this summer. I think the earlier the better, especially for a quarterback."
