Seven-Footer Shines at Auburn Camp

A class of 2013 prospect talks about his basketball camp at Auburn and recruiting.

Memphis, Tenn.--Class of 2013 big man Sam Edward was one of the top performers at Auburn's one-day camp for basketball prospects.

Coach Tony Barbee's event last weekend attracted prospects from across the region, including seven-footer Edward from Westwood High in Memphis.

Edward was a force near the basket, making it difficult for anyone to score inside when he was on the floor.

"The camp went real good," Edward said. "I had a lot of blocks and a lot of rebounds, plus I scored a lot of points."

Edward, who is 17 years old, will be a senior for the 2012-2013 season. He noted that he is still growing and currently checks in at seven feet, one inch tall while weighing 265 pounds.

That size has helped attract attention from major colleges. Asked who is recruiting him, he said, "The whole SEC."

Asked if he has a favorite college, he said that three programs top the list. "My favorites are Auburn, Mississippi State and Tennessee. I like their programs."

The center said that he is looking for a college team that runs offensive sets through post players and that will have a major impact on where he signs. Getting the ball near the basket and converting passes into points is one of his strengths as a player, the big man noted.

Samuel said that going into his summer AAU season with the Bluff City Legends he is working on his rebounding and blocking shots.

As a junior the center said that he averaged a double-double with 12 points, 10 rebounds and eight blocked shots per contest.
