"I have been talking to Coach (Jay) Boulware and I told him that right now it looks like Auburn will be my decision," Carlson tells Inside The Auburn Tigers. "I'm going to give it a week and I'm going to think about it. I'll probably have my decision by Wednesday of next week. We'll see then. I haven't made a commitment yet."
Also looking at Virginia and North Carolina, Carlson said neither have offered to this point because of depth at the position. With Auburn looking for someone to come in and jump into the mix with senior Cody Parkey, the 6-5 kicker said that makes the Tigers very interesting to him.
"Even if both were to offer me at this point I just feel more comfortable with Auburn," Carlson said. "I'm liking it more as an option every day. I'm going to give it a week to think about it more and hopefully I'll decide by then. Unless something extreme changes I think it's going to be Auburn."
Getting to know more and more about Boulware and Auburn's special teams, Carlson said that's one of the things that has the Tigers at the top of his list at the moment, but it's not the only thing.
"I really like their special teams program and the emphasis they have on it there," Carlson said. "For me it's really big. If I do have any thoughts about trying to do to the next level after college that would definitely set you up. Playing SEC football at a good school like Auburn would be awesome.
"Academically they showed me a lot too," he added. "I got to see that side of things and became more confident in their academic side of things too. Then it's also really close to my grandparents, cousins, and aunts and uncles live (Birmingham area). That's also nice."
One of the top kicking coaches in the country, Chris Sailer had this to say about Carlson:
"Daniel is an extremely talented kicker. Has the biggest leg in the nation. Hits a great ball off the ground and his kickoffs are D1 ready right now. A great athlete that has a big college future."
