Young Linebacker Looking to Prove He Can Play

Auburn football player Kris Frost talks about the start of preseason practice.

Auburn, Ala.--After missing the entire 2011 football season while recovering from a shoulder injury, Auburn outside linebacker Kris Frost said he is focused on doing whatever it takes to earn playing time.

"Right now I am trying to do everything I can for my team and show the coaches I can be relied on," he said. "I am trying to remember things from the film room and transfer them over to the field."

Frost and the Tigers hit the practice field for the first time this preseason on Wednesday. They will work out daily through Saturday, take Sunday off and put on full pads for the frist time on Monday.

Frost is 6-2, 225 pounds out of Matthews, N.C., where he was a U.S. Army All-American and a standout performer on a state championship team at Butler High as a senior prior to choosing the Tigers.

One of the themes with the Auburn players at the start of preseason drills has been that they put in a lot of time and effort during their summer workouts to make sure the team is ready to improve on last season's 8-5 record. Coach Gene Chizik said that from what he has seen so far the Tigers look to be in good shape physically and are eager to improve.

"We are all excited to be out there and we are trying to bring back everything from the spring and we have been watching film every step of the way going into the fall," Frost said. "We are just trying to put it on the field and adjust to the speed of everything. We are really progressing."

The Tigers return a trio of linebackers with starting experience in seniors Daren Bates and Jonathan Evans along with junior Jake Holland. However, behind that trio there is virtually no college game experience at the three linebacker positions so the opportunity to contribute couldn't be a lot better for a young player like Frost as he learns his assignments.

"We all have a better grasp of what we are supposed to do, but at the same time, and I know it is that way with me personally, a lot of guys feel like we need to get better quickly," he said. "That is what we are here for and that is why we are working so hard."
