Cox: "Southern Miss Still In The Lead"

When the Southern Miss football coaching change was announced, the first commitment to change his mind was WR James Cox of Northridge HS in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Is he having second thoughts about that decision? Where does he stand at this point?

James Cox was very close to the previous staff at Southern Miss, so it was no surprise when he publicly came out and said he was no longer committed to the Eagles.

After a week has passed, Cox said he remains in the same place where he was, but he is still very high on Southern Miss.

"I was upset when it first happened and so after talking it over with people close to me I decided to open things back up," he said. "I just want the fans to know its not over with Southern Miss right now.

Since his decommitment, however, Cox said there are a lot of teams looking his way.

"I have heard that Cincinnati is coming to look at me," he said. "Also Arizona State, Colorado State, and Purdue have all expressed interest as well."

For Cox, he's in a wait and see right now with the Eagles.

"I just didn't think I could stay committed to a school where I didn't know who I would be playing for next season," he said. "It is subject to change.

"All the coaches they have told me they are thinking about hiring, I really like those guys. Like Coach Anderson, he's a big time coach. I think they will hire someone big, so Southern Miss is still in the lead for me.

"I still think there is a big, big chance I could end up down there."

Cox said he hears right now from a few GA's who are still around. "They want what is best for me, and they've been supportive of me the entire time," he added.

The big WR said he'll be taking his official on the 14th with good friend Tere Calloway. He doesn't have any other visits planned to any other schools yet.
