Versatile Junior Talks About Auburn Visit

Two-way standout Austin Mansell talks about visiting Auburn, talking with the coaches, and more.

Jasper, Ala.—One of the positions that Coach Gus Malzahn and his staff will be targeting in the 2014 recruiting class is the fullback/h-back spot. With senior Jay Prosch gone after this season the focus will be on finding a replacement at that spot who can be a true blocking back.

A player who may fit the bill is 6-1, 225 Austin Mansell from Walker High in Jasper. A physical blocker and runner for the Vikings in addition to playing linebacker as well, he recently made a trip to Auburn to meet the new coaches and came away impressed by what he saw and heard.

"The new coaching staff seems great," Mansell says. "I like them a lot better than I do than last one. They're out there working hard and doing what they need to do to be a championship caliber team.

"They mean business," he adds. "They've done a good job, so far, recruiting-wise."

Spending time with Coach Scott Fountain talking about a possible future on offense with the Tigers, he also had the opportunity to talk with Ellis Johnson as well about the linebacker position and Auburn's defense. He says that was amazing to have the opportunity to spend time talking with both.

"We watched some film and went over some plays and what it would be like," he says of Fountain. "Then I went over with Ellis Johnson and talked about linebacker stuff because I'm kind of being recruited as both. He explained the formations and defensive stuff. I love both sides and it's cool to meet everybody."

A visitor to Auburn each of the last two summers for a camp, Mansell says he's very interested in the Tigers, but is still waiting on an offer from Malzahn. He says that's case with all of his favorites at the moment and he will just keep working until that day comes.

Mansell says in addition to Auburn he plans to visit Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Cincinnati and North Carolina State for Junior Days and he's also hearing from Alabama as well.
