Scout 300 S favors two

Is the race almost over for Cortez McDowell? Two schools have pulled out in front, but there are others still in the picture. Get the latest on this four-star safety here.

Cortez McDowell has been offered scholarships by over 20 schools.

The 6-foot-2, 203 pound safety out of Locust Grove, Ga. has taken visits to numerous schools and two have jumped out in front.

"Tennessee and Florida State kind of have a slight lead over everyone else right now," McDowell told Scout.

The Vols and Seminoles have a "family feel" and McDowell called the football atmosphere "insane" at each school.

The coaches are coming hard after McDowell from each school.

"Tennessee has two coaches that were recruiting me when they were at other schools and they are still recruiting me now for Tennessee. FSU also has a coach that was a different school recruiting me and he is now recruiting me for FSU, so I have good relationships with those schools."

Another SEC school will have their chance to move up his list weekend. Auburn will have McDowell on their campus.

FSU will have the Scout 300 prospect on their camppus for a visit on April 13.

Who else is still in the race behind FSU and UT?

"The next group of schools would be Alabama, Vanderbilt, Auburn, Ohio State, Georgia Tech, North Carolina, and Georgia," McDowell said. "They are all in one group a little behind my top two."

Time could be running out for schools in that group to make a move. McDowell will make an early decision.

"I might commit in the spring, but if not, then I will definitely commit in the summer. I will make an early decision."

McDowell is the No. 25 safety in the country on Scout.
