Auburn Takes Important Series Win Over Rebels

Auburn defeated #18 Ole Miss in a weekend series to put the Tigers in 11th place in the SEC with two weekends remaining.

Auburn, Ala.—Needing another series win to stay in the hunt for postseason play, the Auburn Tigers got just what the doctor ordered after winning two out of three against 18th-ranked Ole Miss over the weekend.

Now firmly inside the 12-team cut line for the SEC Tournament with two weekends left in league play, Coach John Pawlowski's club is 9-9 since being swept by Vanderbilt and LSU to start conference play.

"We've talked about the fact that we can compete and play with anybody," Pawlowski says. "If we go out there and play the type and style of baseball we're capable of then we can do that. Unfortunately we haven't had too many things go our way, but the best thing about this team is they keep fighting. We've got a lot more baseball to play."

Sunday's win was particularly important for the Tigers to keep a lead over Missouri and keep the momentum heading on the road this weekend at Florida. Damek Tomscha's eighth-inning home run provided the spark to finish off the Rebels and he points out it's a feeling this team hopes to continue the remainder of the season.

"It's a huge momentum thing for us," the third baseman says. "You can tell through the at-bats we've been having that we've been locked in the last two games. I know Coach (Gabe) Gross wants us to be locked-in when we get to the plate and you can really tell that's what we're doing. Hopefully, we can carry it on and win a few more series."

Player of The Week: This is a tough call as Damek Tomscha (4-12, 3 RBI) and Garrett Cooper (6-11, 3 runs) both were good at the plate this week, but Blake Austin was the story of the weekend for the Tigers. Getting a hit on Friday night to break out of a slump, Austin finished 7-11 for the weekend, including a perfect 4-4 day in Saturday's win.

Pitcher of The Week: Reliever Terrance Dedrick makes this an easy call after earning a save and a win for the Tigers in the series vs. Ole Miss. In two outings he allowed just one hit in four and two/thirds innings and struck out four. Reid Carter also deserves recognition as well, pitching three scoreless innings in Sunday's win.
