Malzahn Releases Depth Chart For 2013 Opener

Auburn released its first depth chart for the Gus Malzahn era as the Tigers prepare to face Washington State this Saturday night at Jordan-Hare Stadium.

Auburn, Ala.--Auburn will face Washington State in the season opener Saturday night in the first football game for Gus Malzahn as the head coach of the Tigers.

Malzahn released the depth chart prior to Wednesday's practice with several young players on the first team including redshirt freshman Alex Kozan winning the starting job at left guard.

"Alex Kozan is a guy who has really improved since the first day of spring," Malzahn said. "He is getting more mature. He is a strong guy. We were a little concerned about his mobility early, but he has answered that question. He has gotten a lot faster and quicker, and he has had a very good fall camp."

At running back Tre Mason will open the season as the starter, but junior college transfer Cameron Artis-Payne is right on his heels. With both expected to get plenty of work against the Cougars, Malzahn said the depth is a huge plus for the Tigers expecting to run the ball early and often this season.

"He and Tre both are pretty much on equal ground going into this first game, and they both had outstanding fall camps," Malzahn noted. "Corey Grant is a guy you can see in the mix, too. The best thing is we feel like we have some quality depth at the running back position going in, and you can never have enough of that."

Chris Davis is listed as the No. 1 punt returner ahead of Quan Bray, who handled those duties for the Tigers last year. Davis is a senior cornerback while Bray is a junior wide receiver.

Mason and fellow junior tailback Corey Grant are the top two kickoff returners for the season opener. Mason returned three last season for an average of 26.3. Grant did not have any returns. Onterio McCalebb, a 2012 senior, had 23 of the team's 36 kickoff returns. Mason averaged 26.4 yards per kickoff return on 28 attempts as a freshman with one going 97 yards for a score vs. Utah State.
