"It was shocking at first, but I learned not to take it to the head because anything can happen. I'm just trying to stay positive and do what I need to do," he said.
"My deep ball is pretty nice and I'm a dual-threat. Sometimes I like sitting in the pocket. I'd rather throw before I run."
The sophomore signal-caller plans to take his time with the recruiting process, but says two schools have his attention early – Florida State and Auburn. He's especially impressed with how Seminoles redshirt freshman quarterback Jameis Winston looks this year.
"I give all the credit to coach Jimbo Fisher. He's put two or three in the first round of the draft. I want to be one of those hopefully," Gaines said.
He also has his eye on Auburn, and it's a former Tiger's success that especially interests him.
"Cam Newton. They want me to be the next Cam Newton. I don't know if I can live up to that, but I'm hoping that I can. We run something like their offense. I'm hoping to get up there so I can know what I'm doing when I do get up there," he said.
According to Gaines' Frosproof head coach, Price Harris, Gaines also likes Florida a lot. The Gators were the first to offer.
