Tigers Dominate Tide In Women's Hoops Win

The Auburn women's basketball team cruised to an SEC victory at Tuscaloosa.

Tuscaloosa, Ala.--The Auburn women's basketball team defeated in-state rival Alabama 61-39 as the Tanner sisters led the Tigers to victory on Thursday night at Foster Auditorium.

Senior guard Tyrese Tanner scored 15 points and added nine rebounds while sophomore center Tra'cee Tanner finished with a double-double scoring 14 points and pulling in 10 rebounds.

Freshman guard Brandy Montgomery added 10 points and nine rebounds for the Tigers, who improved to 11-6 overall and 2-2 in SEC play. Senior center Peyton Davis added eight points and eight rebounds.

For the Tigers it was their 17th victory in its last 21 games vs. the Crimson Tide. Second-year AU head coach Terri Williams-Flournoy improved her Auburn record to 2-1 vs. Alabama in her first meeting with new Alabama coach Kirsty Curry.

"They came out and played extremely hard," Williams-Flournoy said of her team. "I thought the changing of our defenses really kept their point guard off balance.

The Tigers took control of the game in the first half, racing out to a 41-14 break at intermission.

Auburn hit 17-33 (51.5 percent) field goals in the half and made 6-6 foul shots while holding the Tide to 5-30 (16.7 percent) shooting and 2-4 free throws.

Tyrese Tanner led the Tigers in scoring at halftime with 10 points and Tra'cee Tanner added eight.

Another reason for the big lead at the break was a 27-15 rebounding advantage. For the game the Tigers held a 52-38 margin in rebounds.

Auburn hit 42.9 percent from the field while holding Alabama to 21.7 percent from the field. The field goal shooting difference was so vast Auburn's second half free throwing shooting woes didn't matter as the Tigers finished the night hitting just 12-25 at the foul line.

The Tigers return to action on Sunday with a 1 p.m. CST home game vs. Kentucky.
