"I really enjoyed it," Russell tells Inside The Auburn Tigers. "I saw everything I wanted to see. It just felt like home."
Auburn made Russell one of its top targets on the defensive line and that paid off for Coach Rodney Garner as the longtime Georgia commitment backed off that decision late in the season before flipping to the Tigers in late December.
A powerful pass rusher from his defensive tackle spot, Russell has the athleticism to jump into the rotation right away because of his 6-2, 285 frame quick first step. An Under Armour All-American, Russell got the opportunity to bond with future teammates such as Tre Williams, Stephen Roberts, Kalvaraz Bessent, and Sean White in Orlando and they were together again last weekend in Auburn.
Another one of the visitors in last weekend was four-star defensive end Andrew Williams. Enjoying his visit immensely, Williams is high on the Tigers, but Clemson is also strongly in the mix and he's still got a visit left to check out Dabo Swinney's Tigers. Fellow four-star visitor Davon Godchaux also enjoyed his visit and it's safe to say Gus Malzahn's program made an impact on him, but it will be tough to sway him from LSU if his visit to Baton Rouge goes well this weekend.
Busy Week For Auburn Coaches
Auburn's coaching staff has been all over this week with an especially busy day on Wednesday. Gus Malzahn and Dameyune Craig spent much of the day in Mobile visiting commitments Tre Williams, Justin Thornton and DeShaun Davis. The group had dinner together Wednesday night. Earlier in the day Malzahn and Craig stopped by Senior Bowl practice to see Dee Ford, Chris Davis, Jay Prosch and Cody Parkey in action. At the same time on Wednesday offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee was in South Florida for an in-home visit with Auburn quarterback commitment Sean White.
That was just part of the travel that Malzahn has done as he was at Georgia Military on Monday seeing defensive line commitments Devaroe Lawrence and Davonte Lambert. A visitor to Mississippi State last weekend, Lawrence looks to be solid to the Tigers and is expected to take an unofficial visit back to Auburn on Saturday.
Malzahn also visited the Jacksonville, Fla. area this week with defensive back Lamont Simmons one of the guys he looked in on. Having already visited Auburn and with a possible trip to USC this weekend, the versatile Simmons is a guy the Tigers would likely take if he decided to commit because he can play either cornerback or safety in Ellis Johnson's scheme.
Perhaps the biggest name still left on the board is five-star Rashaan Evans and he got a full dose of Auburn's defensive staff on Wednesday night with Johnson, Rodney Garner, Charlie Harbison and Melvin Smith all in-home with the Auburn High standout. Malzahn still has his official visit with Evans for next week and that could be huge to back up his official visit to the Plains this weekend and before the talented player makes another unofficial trip to UCLA before signing day.
