Five-star Daron Payne, Scout.com's No.4-ranked defensive tackle, spent much of his time building a stronger relationship with defensive line coach Rodney Garner, who has been recruiting the talented Shades Valley High prospect since last spring.
He said he already has a good connection with Garner, who would be his position coach if he signs with the Tigers.
"(Garner said) that I fit in nice with the defensive scheme and that he will coach me up like I was his kid," Payne said. "It's nice knowing I'd have a coach that would be like a father figure."
Payne also spent time "hanging out" with more of the coaching staff, including head coach Gus Malzahn. Payne said Malzahn spent time talking to him about school and campus life.
While he isn't ready to name a leader yet, Payne said it's a safe assumption that the Tigers and in-state rival Alabama are his top two schools. He said it would be a tough decision for him to choose between the two.
"It's my dream school, and (Alabama is) just a great team," said the 6-3, 326-pound lineman, who added that the dream school is Auburn.
Payne said he's probably going to stretch out the recruiting process and make a decision sometime around signing day because he wants to look at more schools and see what they have to offer. He added that Clemson and Ole Miss are in the mix behind the Tigers and Tide on his list and that he's planning to take a trip to Mississippi State in the next two or three weeks.
