Penn State hosted a number of top prospects on Saturday March 22,including Washington (D.C.) St. John's 2015 defensive back Ayron Monroe.
"The visit went really well, I got to see some different parts of the school this time" said Monroe, who holds an offer from Penn State, Maryland, and Virginia, among others. "We watched practice, and took a tour of the campus. I've seen the football facilities before, but this time we got to see the actual campus, the downtown area, the dorms."
The 6-foot, 195-pounder liked the small town feel of State College, and he was impressed with the rest of campus as well.
"The whole school is really nice," Monroe said. "I like the way it is set up and how everything is close together within walking difference."
After checking out campus, Monroe and the rest of the recruits watched Penn State's spring practice.
The St. John's standout is being recruited by some schools as a corner, but when he picked up his Penn State offer a month ago, defensive coordinator Bob Shoop expressed interest in maximizing Monroe's talent at the safety position. So at practice, Monroe paid close attention to attention to the safeties.
"I was mainly watching my position with coach [Bob] Shoop, I was with him for a while at the practice," Monroe said. "The players and coaches all had really high energy, everyone was really into it. [Practice] wasn't a boring dragging practice, everyone was having fun and they had a lot of enthusiasm."
He added: "Coach Franklin brought a lot of energy to practice, he as really interactive with the team."
Monroe said his favorite part of practice actually had nothing to do with defense.
"During the field goals, he [Franklin] was doing a lot of things to try and distract the kicker," Monroe said. "It was pretty funny, [Franklin] he has his blow horn, and he was blowing it right by the kickers and saying stuff to them trying to distract them, it was pretty funny."
After practice, Monroe listened in on the positional post-practice huddles, and he got to spend some time talking to some of the players.
"I had never really talked to the players before, but this time we got to meet the players, and we got to see how they break down by position after practice," Lewis said. "I got to listen in with the safeties, and hear the coaches talk to the positions in their huddles."
"I got to talk to some of the safeties that were there. I talked to Adrian [Amos], and some of the other defensive backs too," Monroe said. "That was pretty cool, we were all just kind of getting to know each other, building a connection."
Franklin also made sure to introduce all the 2014 signees who were in attendance, and Monroe said he really enjoyed talking to Upper Marlboro (Md.) Wise safety Marcus Allen.
"Marcus [Allen] and I kind of knew each other before, but we talked for a while and I felt like we got to know each other a lot better," Monroe said. "He signed there [PSU] as a safety so it was cool talking to him, I felt like we built a pretty good connection."
Although Monroe isn't ready to name any favorite, Penn State seems to be in a good position with the Washington D.C. product after his latest visit.
"I would say they [Penn State] stand pretty high right now," Monroe said. "Their staff has a lot of really cool people on it, and they have a lot of people who care about the program and athletes more than themselves so that is definitely going to do big things for their program.
