Baseball Tigers Have Their Backs To The Wall

Auburn needs a strong second half finish if it hopes to be playing in the postseason in 2014.

Auburn, Ala.--What started out as a great week for the Auburn Tigers, beating Troy on Tuesday night and pulling out a dramatic 2-1 Friday night win on the road at Alabama, turned into yet another letdown as Sunny Golloway's club dropped games on Saturday and Sunday to fall into a tie for last place in the Southeastern Conference standings at the halfway point of the 10-week conference schedule.

Close games have been the difference the last few seasons between Auburn making the NCAA Tournament and staying at home. That has already been a problem through the first 15 games this season as well with four of the nine losses by two runs or less. Throw in a blown three-run lead against Ole Miss in an 8-5 loss and this Auburn team could easily be right in the thick of the race at the moment.

Mistakes continue to be the main problem for the Tigers when it comes to winning games in the SEC and most of those have come on the base paths. In 15 conference games this season Auburn has had 24 players thrown out on the bases. Twice the Tigers have had two runners thrown out at the plate in the same inning. Without those mistakes the record would likely be much different at this point in the season.

Player of the Week: Freshman shortstop Damon Haecker had a solid week, going 5-14 with two runs scored and one RBI. Making two starts, fellow freshman Brett Binning had four hits in seven at-bats including three hits in Sunday's loss to Alabama.

Pitcher of the Week: Sophomore reliever Trey Wingenter was one of the bright spots for the Tigers on the mound this week, pitching five scoreless innings of relief in two games. Four of those innings came in Sunday's loss as he kept Auburn in the game against Alabama and gave the Tigers a chance to win.

Up Next: Auburn will travel to Birmingham on Tuesday to face Samford before returning home to take on South Carolina in a three-game series at Plainsman Park. The Tigers last defeated the Gamecocks in a series in 1997 and are just 10-37 overall against South Carolina since that time.
