Stagnant Offense Dooms Tigers In Sweep

Auburn was swept by Mississippi State over the weekend as the Tigers scored just one run in three games.

Auburn, Ala.--Needing a big weekend to keep the momentum following a series win at Arkansas, the Auburn Tigers instead continued their struggles at the plate and the result was a sweep at the hands of Mississippi State.

Scoring just one single run in the series, a late solo home run off the bat of freshman Daniel Robert on Sunday, the Tigers now find themselves a half-game out of 12th place and currently out of the SEC Tournament with two weekends left in the regular season.

Currently 25-23 overall and 9-15 in league play, Auburn has won just five of its last 18 games against conference foes since winning the first two series against Texas A&M and Tennessee.

Much of the reason for the problems this season for the Tigers has been a lack of production at the plate. That was magnified over the weekend when Auburn hit just .144 as a team, managing just 13 hits in 90 at-bats.

The offensive problems started long before the weekend however, dating back to a sweep at Ole Miss. Since dropping an extra-inning game on Friday night against the Rebels, a game the Tigers led 5-2 at one time, Auburn has been off its mark at the plate. In 14 games since that loss the Tigers have scored a total of 29 runs with seven of those coming last Saturday in a win over Arkansas.

"I just know we're unable to score runs right now," Coach Sunny Golloway said. "When we do get guys in an opportunity to score runs, we don't. For me it goes back to approach, and I've said that a million times. To teach approach in the middle of the spring is a tough time to do it. We'll continue to do it, but we probably don't have a solid hitting philosophy right now."
