Backs To The Wall For Baseball Tigers

Auburn likely needs to win the series vs. visiting LSU next weekend to have any chance at making the SEC Tournament.

Auburn, Ala.--Needing a winning weekend to make a move in the Southeastern Conference baseball standings, the Auburn Tigers instead suffered another crushing Sunday loss and now find themselves on the outside looking in with one weekend left in conference play.

Leading 5-0 in the final game of the series at Kentucky with a chance to move in front of Georgia and inside the cut-line for the SEC Tournament, Auburn couldn't hold the lead down the stretch and missed golden opportunities on offense to fall 6-5.

Currently 13th in the league standings, Auburn is one-half game behind the Georgia Bulldogs and one game behind Tennessee with a series left against LSU at home next weekend at Plainsman Park. Needing to win one more game than Tennessee or Georgia because of the series win over the Volunteers earlier this year and Georgia's tie against LSU, Auburn still has a chance to make it to Hoover, but the Tigers will need to win games this week and also get help.

Georgia faces the Kentucky team Auburn played over the weekend while Tennessee faces a motivated Florida team that is playing for a national seed in the NCAA Tournament.

With Kentucky just an average team on the road, the chances of a sweep at Georgia are slim. That would mean the Tigers would need two wins against LSU to earn a spot in Hoover. Playing at home, if Tennessee should be able to win at least one game against the Gators that would again force Auburn to win the series against the visiting Bengal Tigers.

Up Next

Auburn faces an LSU team looking for a strong finish to try to get back into position to be a host in the NCAA Tournament. Solidly in field of 64, LSU will lean on a strong pitching staff to get the job done. One of the best in the nation is junior starter Aaron Nola. Expected to be one of the top picks in the Major League Baseball Draft, Nola has been dominant this season at 8-1 overall with an ERA of just 1.43. He has struck out 111 batters and walked just 22 in 94 2/3 innings this season.
