Derwin James showed exactly why he’s the top 2015 in the nation in Haines City’s 30-19 win over Whitehall. James totaled eight tackles (three for loss), one forced fumble and blocked a field goal. The Florida State commit was absolutely dominant. It’s clear that he is a very special player. Tavon Cox was also a big contributor on the Haines City defense. Cox had five tackles in the win. Whitehall started off strong and scored two touchdowns before the Haines City offense got going. The Zephyrs’ offense struggled overall. Penn State commit Saquon Barkley had a few nice runs and one one-yard touchdown in the loss.

Friday: Longwood (Fla.) Lyman at Apopka (Fla) at 7:30p.m.
Much like Derwin James the night before, Martez Ivey made his case for the top offensive tackle spot clear Friday night. Ivey absolutely manhandled everyone on the field, starting off the 43-7 Apopka victory with three consecutive pancakes. Ivey showed his relentless competitiveness, playing hard through the whistle and coaching up his teammates. He’s really developed as a vocal leader for the Blue Darters. Auburn fullback commitment Chandler Cox sat out the second half after a minor ankle sprain. After the game, he said he could have played if the game counted. Cox did have a few nice runs, totaling 47-yards on five carries and two touchdowns. He also passed for 53-yards, completing five of nine passes. His receivers had several bad drops even when Cox put the ball in the right place. Apopka could make another run at a state title this year.
