One of the top linebacker prospects in the country, Auburn four-star commitment Darrell Williams is an impressive player capable of playing in the box and rushing the passer, but also has the versatility to play in coverage as well. Those elements are what make him such a big player for the Hoover Bucs and Coach Josh Niblett.
"Darrell is a great player and a big part of what we do defensively," Niblett said. "He’s a guy that can do a lot of things. If he needs to play in the box, he can. If he needs to play on the perimeter or bring blitz and pressure guys, he can go that. He’s just a great athlete. He’s got a lot of length on the field so he can cover a lot of grass. Anytime you got a guy like that who can play up to the caliber that he plays, it gives you an opportunity to do a lot of different things on defense."
On a team loaded with talented defensive players, Williams gives Hoover the luxury of playing outside to give them more size on the defense. Sometimes that doesn't put him in the most opportunistic position to make plays because teams can avoid his side of the field, but Niblett said it doesn't keep him from impacting the defense.
"He allows us the chance to do a lot of different things that helps us in the back end, but also helps us in the box because he’s got so much length to him," Niblett said. "He can help in the run in the box, he’s fast enough to get back in the box. When he pressures, he’s a hard guy to throw over. His hands and his reach are so big and he’s got great ball skills."
