Auburn, Ala.--Three days before his first game as Auburn’s head basketball coach, Bruce Pearl underwent what Auburn University officials said was successful back surgery.

Pearl, who was hired by Auburn in March to take over the hoops program, had his procedure done on Tuesday by Dr. Colby Maher of the Andrews Institute in Pensacola, Fla. The facility’s founder, Dr. James Andrews, is one of Auburn team’s physicians.

Pearl is expected to be on the sideline coaching the Tigers as they play their first and only exhibition game of the season on Friday vs. the University of West Alabama. Tipoff for the game is set for 8:30 p.m. CST.

Last month Pearl asked Auburn fans to sell out the game as a statement about a change in direction for the AU program. With all of the seats being sold the AU Ticket Office is now selling standing room only tickets.

The Tigers will open the regular season a week after the exhibition opener when they take on the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Panthers, a team Pearl coached prior to taking his first SEC job at Tennessee.
