The Dye-Gest: It's A New Day On Defense

College Football Hall of Fame coach Pat Dye writes about Will Muschamp's return to Auburn.

What a terrific hire Gus Malzahn pulled off by bringing in a very impressive coach to join the Auburn staff as defensive coordinator. Will Muschamp is an exciting addition to the football program.

%%MATCH_8%% POWER: Power to Family

I have been impressed with how Coach Malzahn has been running the football program since he took over and his latest hire is one of the best moves I have seen made by any Auburn coach.

It remains to be seen exactly what kind of early impact hiring Coach Muschamp will have on the team as the Tigers prepare for their Outback Bowl game vs. Wisconsin and continue to put the finishing touches on their 2015 signee class. However, one thing I am certain about is that he will have a very positive impact on the program next season.

I can say that with confidence because I believe there is nobody out there who has the kind of potential to coordinate a Southeastern Conference defense as well as Will Muschamp can. He grew up on SEC football as a walk-on from Rome, Ga., who developed into an outstanding college player at the University of Georgia. He has coached at Auburn twice before and did an outstanding job both times, first as a graduate assistant and later as the defensive coordinator.

As an old defensive coach at heart I am looking forward to seeing what Will can do to improve the Tigers. I don’t like to be overly critical, but there is no doubt that Auburn needs to get better on the defensive side of the ball, and I don’t think it is a lack of ability that has been all of the problem.

Given the right opportunity, I believe the Tigers have a large number of defensive players who will step up and get the job done. Without a doubt Coach Muschamp has a history of getting his guys to play well.

I don’t know if there are going to be more coaching staff changes or not. I have no idea. I really don’t think Auburn’s lack of success was due to any one individual coach, but when all of the parts were put together for a game the Tigers often didn’t perform like a cohesive unit.

I am really excited by what is happening with the addition of Will Muschamp to the staff and I am excited for the Auburn people out there because it’s a new day on defense for the Tigers.
