Lance Thompson Added To Auburn Staff

Auburn has hired Lance Thompson to coach linebackers, putting the finishing touches on a powerhouse defensive staff for Gus Malzahn and Will Muschamp.

Auburn, Ala.--Coach Gus Malzahn gave his new defensive coordinator, Will Muschamp, the ability to go out and hire to fill out his staff and on Wednesday the Tigers completed their defensive staff by adding veteran Lance Thompson to coach the linebackers for the Tigers.

One of the nation's top recruiters, Thompson leaves rival Alabama to join forces with Muschamp once again after the two worked together at LSU from 2002-2003.

Auburn and Malzahn announced the hiring Wednesday. Thompson, 50, is the third defensive assistant coach Auburn has added since the end of the regular season, joining defensive coordinator Muschamp and defensive backs coach Travaris Robinson.

"I'm excited to have Lance Thompson join our staff," Malzahn said. "Lance is very familiar with Will having worked with him before. He's an outstanding coach and an outstanding recruiter who is very familiar with our state and the Southeastern Conference. Lance will be a great addition to our staff."

That familiarity is something that was important to Thompson because of his knowledge of Muschamp and their history together. Throw in the chance to work with Malzahn and he said it made the opportunity to move one he couldn't pass up.

"I'm really excited and very appreciative to be joining the Auburn football family and work with Coach Malzahn, Coach Muschamp and the entire staff," Thompson said.

"I have a great amount of respect for Coach Malzahn and what he represents and what he has accomplished in a short period of time," Thompson added. "I hope to bring my strengths to the program to help Auburn football achieve its goals of winning a national championship. I’m blessed to be joining Coach Malzahn’s staff and the Auburn family."

Lance Thompson

Thompson has worked at Alabama three different times, including his latest stint from 2012-14. He also has worked at Tennessee, Georgia Tech and the University of Central Florida, where he was defensive coordinator from 2004-06.

Known as a closer on the recruiting trail, Thompson has built a strong relationship with many of the top guys in the 2015 class like CeCe Jefferson. With the five-star taking a trip to Auburn this weekend it puts the Tigers in an even better position with some of its top defensive guys still left on the board.
