Recruits Excited About Addition Of Thompson

Auburn commitments Darrell Williams and Kerryon Johnson talk about the addition of Lance Thompson.

Montgomery, Ala.--When Auburn hired Lance Thompson away from Alabama on Wednesday to coach the linebackers it put the finishing touches on a big move for Coach Gus Malzahn in regards to his defense for the Tigers. It started when he hired Will Muschamp to coordinate things on that side of the ball, but by adding Travaris Robinson and Thompson to the staff Malzahn has shown that he is eager to take the next step as a program.

That starts by adding more talent to the defense, something that is the strength of the new staff and existing defensive line Coach Rodney Garner. With the entire group known for their recruiting prowess this weekend could be the start of something big with top prospects from all over the country expected to visit Auburn, including five-stars CeCe Jefferson and Byron Cowart and four-stars such as Terry Beckner and Tim Irvin.

Also visiting will be many of Auburn’s current commitments, including a pair of players already very familiar with the newest member of the coaching staff. Recruited by Thompson for Alabama, linebacker Darrell Williams said the Tigers are getting another very good piece of the puzzle.

“I didn’t know at first,” Williams said. “I was kind of hearing from other people that they made the hire. I feel like Auburn is trying to stack it up, just getting coach after coach. I think he’s a good coach. I got to talk to him after being recruited by Alabama as well. I think it will be great for Auburn.”

While he’s on the other side of the ball, Auburn running back commitment Kerryon Johnson is also very familiar with Thompson. Recruited by him for Alabama, this year’s Mr. Football for the state said he is excited about the addition of the coach to an already strong staff.

“I think it’s big for the whole defense,” Johnson said. “I loved Coach Thompson when he was at Alabama. He was the one recruiting me mainly. I loved talking to him every time. He’s going to bring in some talent. I know he knows people, I know he has resources. It’s just going to make us a better team overall.”

Getting better starts with an improved defense, something Williams is anxious to be a part of next fall. Just how he’ll be used by Muschamp and Thompson remains to be seen however and that’s what he’s ready to find out when he takes his visit to Auburn this weekend.

“I just really want to sit down and talk with them and see what the future looks like, see what they want me to be, see what my role will be as a freshman,” Williams said. “I’m willing to work hard and do everything they want me to do. I just want them to know that. I’m going to be ready to work and I’m ready to see what they have in store for me.”
