Auburn gives athletes and coaches the resources and the stage to be successful, but it all boils down to having the right people to make it happen.
For Coach Bruce Pearl, his assistants and players, their win on the road against a Georgia team that has been playing very well was truly impressive, especially considering the circumstances going into the game.
The Tigers found a way to win without one of their best players, Tahj Shamsid-Deen, who is injured and out for the season. Antoine Mason, Auburn’s second-leading scorer, wasn’t able to be at practice prior to the game because he was spending time with his father, who is trying to recover from a heart attack.
I don’t think there was any logical reason to expect Auburn to have a chance to win that game other than the fact that the Tigers have played hard to the finish in every game they have been in this year. When you do that, and when you combine that with good coaching, you have a chance to beat some people you aren’t supposed to beat like the Tigers did vs. the Bulldogs and earlier this season vs. LSU and Xavier.
I have a lot of respect for the efforts of Coach Pearl, his players and his staff. They have a big home game coming up on Tuesday night vs. Alabama and I am sure they will do everything possible to find a way to win.
One of the Auburn teams I enjoy watching is the softball Tigers. They are nationally ranked and getting interest in their program from around the country because of the job Clint Myers has done over the years as a head coach.
Just in his second season at Auburn, he has put together a team that plays with a tremendous amount of energy and sure seems like the players have fun doing it. From what I have been told a lot of outstanding recruits want to come play for Coach Myers so this program is definitely headed in the right direction. The key for him is making sure he picks the right prospects to join the team. Considering he is already a Hall of Fame coach, I think that is exactly what he will do.
Another Auburn team that is fun to watch is the gymnastics squad. The Tigers came very close to upsetting the number two team in the nation, LSU, and looked very good doing it. Coach Jeff Graba has the team scoring higher than any group in Auburn history and the future is bright for Auburn in this sport, too. You could see the signs that the program was progressing last year and it is one of the reasons so many fans have been coming out to watch the meets at Auburn Arena.
