With a pair of runners on base, Gray’s chopper over the head of the Xavier pitcher was fielded by Xavier’s Andre Jernigan, but his thrown wasn’t in time to get the speedy Gray. When the throw got by first baseman Joe Forney it allowed Ebert to easily score after he moved up to third on the hit.
Closer Justin Camp picked up his first win of the season after he allowed just two hits and struck out seven in three and one/third innings of relief for the Tigers. Rocky McCord got the start and pitched well, giving up just five hits and two earned runs in six and one/third innings.
Auburn grabbed the lead first in the fourth inning when freshman DH Hunter Tackett singled home Daniel Robert following a big leadoff double from the first baseman. Later catcher Ben Craft hit into a double play with the bases loaded allowing Tackett to score the second run of the inning.
Xavier scored single runs in the fifth and seventh innings to tie the game and set the stage for Auburn’s dramatic 11th inning victory.
Auburn and Xavier wrap up the series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
