SEC Softball And Baseball Week In Review

Looking at Auburn's softball and baseball weeks in review and also looking forward.

It was another big week for Coach Clint Myers and the Auburn softball team as the Tigers finished off a sweep of Ole Miss last Monday before sweeping Kentucky in the SEC opener over the weekend. Currently 6-0 in the league, the Tigers go on the road again this weekend to Missouri in what will likely be another tough challenge.

Through 34 games this season Auburn still has four players hitting over .400 led by Tiffany Howard’s .545 batting average. Hitting .462 with 14 home runs and 49 RBI, Emily Carosone is having a huge year for the Tigers as well. As a team Auburn is batting .381 with 68 home runs.

While the softball team is rolling, the baseball Tigers missed a golden opportunity to knock off highly ranked Vanderbilt in the series when Auburn failed to finish off a ninth inning comeback in game three of the series. Down 6-3, Auburn scored three runs to tie the game and had the bases loaded with no outs with a great chance to get the win, but couldn’t get the run across. Auburn would eventually lose 7-6 and drop the series, but there were some positives to take out of the series for the Tigers against the Commodores.

The biggest was a much better approach at the plate than the Tigers had shown the previous four games. Auburn had solid contact and hit some balls hard against a Vandy pitching staff that is one of the most talented in the country, but they were still too few and far between to put together enough big innings. A lot of the reason for that is the huge strikeout numbers Auburn is putting up at the moment. Striking out 39 times against Texas A&M and UAB leading up to the series against Vanderbilt, Auburn struck out 29 more times in the series to the Commodores. While pitching and defense will always be key, putting the ball in play can sometimes be the difference between winning and losing a close game.
