SEC Baseball And Softball Week In Review

Looking at big weekends for both Auburn baseball and softball in road series' wins.

Needing a big weekend to get some positive momentum going in the SEC race, the Auburn baseball Tigers took two of three at Mississippi State in Starkville and now find themselves just two games out of second place in the Western Division after three weeks of play.

Allowing just three total runs in three games, including back-to-back shutouts in league play for the first time since 1988, Auburn’s pitching was the difference as the Tigers improved to 17-11 overall and 3-6 in league play following the weekend.

With Samford coming up on Tuesday night in Birmingham and then Arkansas at Plainsman Park this weekend, the Tigers don’t have any time to rest on their laurels, Coach Coach Sunny Golloway pointed out.

“It’s what we planned on doing,” Golloway said of winning the series. “Every weekend we plan on going in and trying to win the series. We accomplished that early and you can’t feel bad about going home on Sunday without a win because you accomplished what you needed to.

“You would have liked to have won, but you’ve got to be able to refocus and understand it’s about winning the series in the SEC. It’s really tough to sweep people, although we’ve been swept, but it was by a really quality club. You just try to go in every weekend and focus on winning the rest of these series.”

Player of the Week:

With Auburn’s offense still struggling it was starting pitchers Cole Lipscomb and Keegan Thompson who stood out this week for the Tigers. Getting the victory on Friday night, Lipscomb allowed just four hits in seven innings against Mississippi State State to improve to 4-0 on the season. Going one better, Thompson allowed just four hits in eight innings to get his fifth win.

It was another good week for Coach Clint Myers and the softball Tigers as they went on the road and split a doubleheader at ACC leader Florida State before winning two out of three at Missouri to cap a challenging week of road tests.

Auburn now has a three-game lead in the Southeastern Conference three weeks into league play for the Tigers, but another challenge awaits this week when Tennessee travels to Jane B. Moore Field for a three-game series starting at 6 p.m. on Thursday.

Player of the Week:

There are plenty of good choices for the Tigers, but it’s hard to go against Emily Carosone. Going 7-14 for the week with seven RBI, Carosone had a big finish with three hits including a grand slam in a Sunday win at Missouri, a team that swept the Tigers last year and advanced to the College World Series.
