Auburn To Face Kentucky In SEC Tournament

Auburn will face Kentucky in the SEC Tournament on Tuesday, likely needing a win to help the chances of an NCAA Tournament berth.

Auburn’s SEC Tournament hopes and possibly NCAA Tournament hopes as well will rest on a showdown with Kentucky (30-24, 14-15) when the two teams meet on Tuesday in Hoover in a single-elimination game at the Hoover Met. With an overall record of 34-22 and 13-17 in SEC play, the Tigers finished ninth in the regular season after losing two out of three at Florida this weekend and must win on the first day of the tournament to earn a berth into the double-elimination bracket that begins on Wednesday.

Tigers Drop Finale At Florida

With an RPI of 23 following Saturday’s game, Auburn could be in good shape for a regional berth, but would likely need at least one win in Hoover to feel good about its chances. Kentucky definitely is in need of a victory with an RPI of 56, making Tuesday a very important game.

Auburn is 75-42 overall against the Wildcats, last facing them in 2014 when Kentucky won two out of three in Lexington. In the SEC Tournament the Tigers are 2-0 against Kentucky with the last meeting coming in 1991.

Around the league LSU is a lock for a national seed with Florida, Texas A&M and Vanderbilt all in the mix for a top eight seed as well. Arkansas and Ole Miss are the only two locks to make a regional at this point with Auburn, Kentucky, and Missouri all likely with work left to do. South Carolina, Alabama and Georgia would need to win the tournament to earn a spot in the NCAA Tournament.
