2017 5-Star OT "Happy" With Auburn Commitment

5-star 2017 offensive tackle Calvin Ashley committed to the Auburn Tigers on Saturday following his Big Cat visit.

Orlando, Fla.--The nation’s top offensive line prospect for the 2017 class ended his recruiting very early in the process when he chose the Auburn Tigers on Saturday after visiting for Big Cat Weekend. Already with offers from all over the country, big Calvin Ashley said it was just time for him because of his love for Auburn.

“I just committed to Auburn,” Ashley said. “I’m very happy. I brought my whole family up this weekend just so I could do it there with the coaching staff. I’m very, very happy. It’s so much relief that I can now stick to one school and be very happy.”

Spending time with several of Auburn’s newest players including Jeff Holland and Kaleb Kim, Ashley said the weekend of bonding with not only the current Tigers but also the recruits made for a great weekend for him and his family. That only cemented things for him while on his trip and made it easy for him to pull the trigger.

“Auburn is everything,” Ashley said. “It’s the culture, it’s not only culture but it’s like family. The whole school treats you just like a family. You can be at home besides your regular home, you can have another home there and feel comfortable.

“It’s so much like family,” he added. “All of the coaches are just like family. My parents are so happy. I talked to my mom and Coach (Scott) Fountain (Ashley's area recruiter) and I said ‘mom do you love it, and she said she loves it so much’. I went back in the office and committed.”

While it’s an exciting thing for the prospect when he makes a decision, it’s also an exciting time for the coaches as well when they land a player with as much upside as Ashley. He said that was apparent for him when he told the coaches of his decision.

“Coach (Rhett) Lashlee jumped on me, he actually jumped on me when I told him,” Lashlee said. “He just hopped up and I picked him up. Everybody was going crazy in the office.”
