Tigers Move Up The List For Top Safety

4-star safety Marlon Character talks about his visit to Auburn and why the Tigers made a move up his list.

Atlanta, Ga.--One of the nation’s top safety prospects, four-star Marlon Character from Grady High has offers from all over the country, including the Auburn Tigers. On Thursday he had the opportunity to see the campus and work out with the coaches while on a trip to the Plains and left impressed by what he saw.

“The visit was great, it went well,” Character said. “Talking to Coach T Rob (Travaris Robinson) and getting coached by him, there were some great drills he put me through and great technique he showed me that will help me out in the long run.

“Talking to Coach (Gus) Malzahn was great,” he added. “Seeing the facilities and the locker room, everything was just great.”

The visit was a big one for both Character and Auburn because it was the first time in nearly four years that the safety was on campus. That allowed him to see many of the new facilities while also talking to Robinson, Malzahn and defensive coordinator Will Muschamp.

“It was important for me because the last time I went down there was when I was going into the ninth grade,” Character said. “I was just doing the camp with about 600 other people. It was kind of hard to get noticed then.

“Ever since I got the offer and they came to the school and said they wanted me up there,” he added. “My coach called me and said we had to get to Auburn. I’m glad I did because it made Auburn stand out for me as far as being recruited by them. I’m really liking it right now.”

One of the biggest reasons Auburn is in the picture now is Robinson. Energetic and always coaching or teaching, Character said the former Tigers’ safety is someone he could see himself playing for on the next level.

“He’s got great energy and a great personality,” Character said. “He understands me. We were just talking about life. He’s a great person and I could tell he’s a great coach. Like I said, he’s very energetic. Everything is cool about him.

“I would love to be coached by him. He was just talking to me about playing early. He drew it up and showed me where I would fit if I just kept working hard and doing what I’m doing. He sees me coming in and playing as a freshman. That was good to know.”

With Alabama, Georgia, LSU, Ole Miss, South Carolina, Virginia Tech and others in addition to Auburn, Character said the Tigers definitely made a move up his list with the visit. While he still has a top three of South Carolina, Virginia Tech and Ohio State, Character said the Tigers are right there and closing in following his visit.

“I would say they moved up a lot,” Character said. “At first I wasn’t really considering them as much, but right now I’m definitely considering them. They’re probably up there kind of right around all the other schools I’m considering, which is my top three.”

Character said there is a possibility he could return to Auburn for a visit next week. Part of the Cam Newton All-Star 7-on-7 team that is heading to IMG Academy for a tournament, Character said he could return along with Caylin Newton, Cam’s younger brother.

“He quarterbacks our team,” Character said. “Coach Malzahn said he wants to get him up there too, so we’ll both probably come back.”
