A point guard who averaged 21 points and seven assists per game as a junior on a Pebblebrook team loaded with talent, Harper committed to the Tigers in March and plans to sign with Coach Bruce Pearl’s team in November.
On Sunday in the finals of the Peach Jam tournament in North Augusta, S.C., Harper led his Georgia Stars AAU team to the championship with a win over a team from St. Louis. Harper led all scorers with 36 points and came through with a strong all-around performance with his assists, steals and rebounding.
Asked what stands out about Harper, the Peach Jam's MVP, Washington tells Inside the Auburn Tigers, “First of all, he is probably going to be the smartest guy on the court at all times. He is a very high IQ kid and nobody works harder than him.
“He is in the gym from open to close,” the coach says. “He is in the weight room working because he just wants to get better. Any time a kid wants to get better, he is going to get better.
“He is an excellent student in the classroom,” Washington points out. “He takes all AP (advanced placement) courses.”
Jared Harper is shown at a basketball camp in June.
A quick player with the ability to score off the drive and from behind the three-point line, Harper is constantly trying to find ways to get the basketball to a teammate who is in good position to score.
“He has a real good feel for the game,” Washington says. “He is always thinking three or four plays ahead.
“Jared makes everybody around him a better player,” the coach adds. “That is the think we like about him. The group he played with last year, all of those guys who are in college, Jared made them all better. I tell him every day to get back to where we were last year it is going to be on Jared’s shoulders.”
