Auburn Opponent Preview: San Jose Spartans

San Jose State is making a return trip to Jordan-Hare Stadium and will be the homecoming opponent for the Tigers.

Editor’s Note: This is the fifth in a series of previews of Auburn’s 2015 football opponents.

After two SEC West matchups vs. LSU and Mississippi State the Tigers play host to a familiar out-of-conference foe. The San Jose State Spartans come to the Plains again hoping to put up more of a challenge than they did in last season’s 59-13 drubbing.

Former Auburn offensive coordinator Al Borges spent a year away from college football. He’s back in the game now with San Jose State and he will look to kickstart an offense that was 73rd in total yards per game (395) and 119th in points (19.3).

Al Borges will be back in Auburn where he was the offensive coordinator for AU's unbeaten 2004 team.

Tyler Winston, a junior wide receiver who caught 78 passes for 694 yards and five touchdowns, is the top threat for the Spartans. With his solid route-running ability he will have a chance to thrive in Borges’s West Coast offense.

San Jose State’s biggest issue on defense last year was stopping the run. Giving up 239.4 yards per contest on the ground can make it difficult to win a college football game. Helping address the problem will be junior linebacker Christian Tago. A former high school standout quarterback, he totaled 96 tackles in just 10 games last season.

This game on Oct. 3rd is Auburn’s homecoming so the old grads who show up at Jordan-Hare Stadium and others will be expecting to see another victory for the Tigers. San Jose State will be coming off of tough road tests against Air Force and Oregon State as well as a home game in Spartan Stadium vs. Fresno State.

Top Offensive Player: Junior Wide Receiver Tyler Winston

Top Defensive Player: Junior Linebacker Christian Tago

Quick Fact: Although poor at defending the run the Spartans were great in pass defense. SJSU ranked first in the country in passing yards allowed per game (117.8).
