Tigers Are Media Days Pick to Win SEC Title

The Auburn football team has been predicted to win the 2015 SEC Championship despite finishing second in the voting for the SEC West.

Hoover, Ala.--Although Auburn has been picked as the runnerup in the SEC West, the Tigers finished first in the voting to win the overall league championship at the 2015 SEC Football Media Days.

On Thursday the league announced that for the first time in the history of the annual media poll that a team was predicted to be the conference champion and not the divisional champ.

Alabama was picked to win the SEC Western Division with 1,405 total points while Auburn was next with 1,362 points. Alabama received 92 first-place votes in the West while Auburn received 108.

Points were allocated on a basis with seven for a first place pick in the division, six for second, five for third, four for fourth, three for fifth, two for sixth and one for seventh place. The Tide was able to win the division vote by being selected fourth or lower on three ballots while was fourth or lower on 26 ballots. Auburn received 108 votes to win the SEC West while Alabama was listed on 92 ballots.

Coach Gus Malzahn’s Auburn team picked up first place 96 votes to win the league title, Alabama was next with 80 and Georgia, the pick to win the SEC East, received 28 votes to win the championship.

Ten of the SEC’s 14 teams received votes to win the league title including LSU with nine, Ole Miss and Arkansas with three, Texas A&M and Tennessee with two while Mississippi State and Florida picked up one apiece.

Avery Young is a returning starter for the Tigers on the offensive line who contributed to Auburn's last SEC championship season in 2013.

Last year Alabama was the SEC Media Days pick to win the conference and the Tide did that, marking just the fifth time since the league switched to divisional play that the media day polls winner was the actual champion.

Vandy was the only team with no votes to win its division.
