Auburn, Ala--Auburn offensive lineman Avery Young has played multiple positions for the Tigers during his career, but has settled in at right tackle heading into the 2015 season.
With plenty of experience under his belt and the desire to improve as a player in his redshirt junior season, Young said for him and the team the goal is just to keep improving between now and when Auburn opens the season against Louisville on Sept. 5.
"It's just to get better every day and try to reach our goals," Young said of what he's looking for as he prepares for his redshirt junior season. "Try to keep the team up. Try to be more of a leader. I’m a vocal person, but not as big as you would see a running back or a receiver being. I’m trying to be a bigger leader than I’ve been in the past."
Leadership is one of the things Gus Malzahn is looking for out of his veterans on both sides of the ball. Another thing is the desire to improve with every practice and every rep on the practice field. That's the edge that Malzahn always mentions and Young said there's no doubt this team is trending in the right direction.
"Everybody has that edge right now," Young said. "Everybody’s got a fire up under them to make sure that everything is perfect. The team, everybody, we want to do well. We always wanted to do that in the past, but as time goes on, you want to get better. Everybody understands what it takes now. There’s a lot of people who have been in big games on this team. We know what it takes. We’re fighting for it."
