Birmingham, Ala.--Coach Gus Malzahn said Thursday that he is upbeat about the future for his Auburn football program as the Tigers get ready to begin practice for their bowl game.
The Tigers, who struggled through a disappointing 6-6 season, will play Memphis on Dec. 30th at the Birmingham Bowl.
On Thursday the coach took a break from his busy schedule this week in which he has been recruiting future players as well as a new defensive coordinator. Speaking at the bowl game press conference at the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame, Malzahn said, “The goal is to get a defensive coordinator and get some continuity. That is my goal to get some continuity and we are going to do that.
“As far as the future goes, the future is going to be very bright at Auburn,” he said. “This bowl game we are playing a very good team and the goal is to win the bowl game to get some momentum.”
Malzahn said he has no doubts improvement is on the horizon.
“If you look at our roster we have got a lot of young guys that will come back, recruiting is going very well and even though this year we had some losses that were close, that tells me that it is going to be a short period of time and we're going to get this thing going in the right direction.”
