John Franklin Talks About His In-Home Visit With Auburn And Signing With The Tigers

Junior college standout John Franklin talks about his future at Auburn and what the Tigers are looking for out of him.

Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.--Making it official by signing with the Auburn Tigers on Wednesday morning and reporting to campus on Jan. 10, junior college quarterback John Franklin had his in-home visit with Gus Malzahn and Dameyune Craig on Saturday morning. Spending time with the coaches and getting a plan for what’s next, the dual-threat speedster is ready for the next chapter in his career at Auburn.

“It was good,” Franklin said. “They came down and got to meet a couple more of my family members. We just hung out and had a good time.

“While I’m at home he (Malzahn) just wants me to stay in shape,” he added. “He had the chance to meet my high school quarterback coach and told him a couple of things he wants me to do. I’m throwing three times a week to make sure i’m ready to go when I get there because the opportunity is there for me to come in day one.”

Getting the chance to play quarterback again on this level has been a goal for Franklin since leaving Florida State, something that he has worked for since transferring to East Mississippi Community College. Now just a few weeks from making that a reality he said it’s an exciting time for him.

“All I have ever asked for was an opportunity because I know I’m going to make the most of it,” Franklin said. “I have just always wanted a legit opportunity and I feel like now I’m getting that chance in a bigger conference at a bigger school.

“I think everything played out the way it was supposed to play out for me. I’m looking forward to really taking advantage of the opportunity and showing the world who I am and what I’ve got.”

Franklin should have every chance to showcase his skills beginning in spring practice for the Tigers. Coming off a season when Auburn’s quarterback duo of Jeremy Johnson and Sean White both struggled with consistency and the offense followed suit with a down year under Malzahn, the need for a dynamic player at the position is an obvious one and Franklin said his future coach made that perfectly clear to him.

“They said in the offense this year what they felt like they were missing most is explosiveness at the quarterback position,” Franklin said. “He said they all believe that’s what I bring, similar to what Nick (Marshall) did but probably more of an advantage.

“Both times they have been in the national championship they have had junior college quarterbacks,” he added. “Coach Malzahn was telling me that when they needed someone to come they went and got Cam. He said they needed someone to play and got Nick. Now they need somebody now and got me. It’s wide open right now and I look forward to taking advantage of that.”
