Montgomery, Ala.--A fast-rising prospect who has seen his stock as a football player take off as a senior following a big year for the Robert E. Lee Generals, 6-2, 182-pound safety Daniel Thomas has already visited both North Carolina and South Carolina. He also has Clemson and Maryland among his final group as he prepares to make an official visit to see the Auburn Tigers this coming weekend.
The fifth school on his final list at the moment, Auburn has yet to offer Thomas, but being from just down the interstate from the Plains he’s very familiar with the Tigers and their history on the field. Because of that he said this weekend will be about continuing to learn more about the new coaches as well as get a feel for what the education side of things is like at Auburn.
“I have been talking to Coach (Kevin) Steele the most,” Thomas said. “He’s a very honest coach. He’s straight-up and straight to the point. He’s cool guy to hang around. He said they want me to come play safety.
“I just want to experience the academic part,” he added. “I already know about the football part so I want to see how the academics are.”
As for the business of an offer Thomas said that’s still something Auburn is discussing at the moment. “They are just trying to get their numbers right up there,” he said. “They want me to come play safety.”
With no timetable set to make a decision Thomas said right now he doesn’t have a leader heading into his weekend trip to Auburn. He plans to announce on signing day at his high school.
