Madison, Ga.--A four-star defensive tackle prospect and frequent visitor to see the Auburn Tigers since last fall, 6-3, 270 M.J. Webb from Morgan County High was back on the Plains last weekend. Spending time with the coaching staff and getting more of a feel for the campus and university setting, Webb said following the visit that the Tigers are right at the top for him.
“It was a great feeling to be back,” Webb said. “I enjoy going over to Auburn and that’s why I have been over there so many times. This time being able to interact with the coaches a whole lot more was a fun time for me.
“They are right up there at the top,” he added. “Even though I don’t have a top list of schools yet I guess you could call Auburn as my top, even though I’m not saying they’re on top just yet. They’re one of the schools on top.”
Auburn had great success in Georgia a year ago, getting five-star defensive tackle Derrick Brown as well as four-star Antwuan Jackson in the game class. With still a big need at the position because of three seniors on the 2016 team, Webb said Garner has made him a priority and that feels good.
“Our bond has grown a lot,” Webb said. “Coach Garner came by the school probably three times, first by himself and then with Coach (Kevin) Steele and then with Coach (Gus) Malzahn. Being over there and talking to them was good and he (Garner) pulled me aside a couple of times and talked to me.
“He just asked me what I was looking for in a campus and what did I not like about Auburn. I was just telling him there is nothing I don’t like about Auburn,” he added. “I haven’t found anything to complain about. Our relationship is pretty good.”
It’s that comfort level at Auburn that has the Tigers at the top for Webb as he prepares for what should be a busy spring with schools visiting him and also some time spent on the road visiting campuses. While he’ll have to plan out his trips and figure out the best way to get to each school, that’s not something he has to worry about with Auburn because of his frequent visits. That’s something that he said is one of the big advantages for the Tigers at the moment.
“I like the atmosphere,” Webb said. “I already know the routes to Auburn and everything like the back of my hand. Just going over there and how peaceful it is, I was talking with one of my buddies and he’s a big Auburn fan. We were just talking about how it’s just like how we live in Morgan County. It’s quiet and that’s what I’m liking about it.
“That’s big for me,” he added. “It just shows me Auburn is a big contender for me. I might go to Auburn and I might not, but I have been spending a lot of time over there. It’s only a two hour drive over there and that’s really nothing. I’m just enjoying everything right now.”
Planning to visit LSU this weekend, Webb said at the moment he plans to hold off making an early decision and is shooting for sometime during his senior year. He has offers from Alabama, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Georgia and many others in addition to Auburn.
