Mobile, Ala.--A highly-regarded football prospect who has been on Auburn's radar for a long time visited campus Tuesday to check out Gus Malzahn’s team as it practiced.
Ryan Johnson, who picked up an early scholarship offer from the Tigers more 13 months ago, made the trip to Auburn with his mother, Angela, to check out the facilities and the school of engineering.
The four-star recruit said the trip was quite worthwhile. “I was able to see how they work and see how Coach (Rodney) Garner coaches my position and how Coach (Gus) Malzahn operates things and how Coach (Kevin) Steele runs the defense. It was definitely a great time.
“I was able to spend time with people I know like Tre Williams, Tre Threat and Marlon Davidson,” Johnson said of three members of the 2016 Tigers. “They showed me how the defense works and how I fit into the schemes. It is a family atmosphere so it is just getting better and better.”
The prospect noted that he and his mother liked the tour of the academic facilities.
Rated the No. 1 defensive end prospect and the No. 10 prospect at his position in the country, Johnson has a long list of colleges who have offered him scholarships. He said that he will probably wait until after spring practice is finished at St. Paul’s before coming up with a list of his favorite colleges, but pointed out, “Auburn is definitely on my top list of schools.
“I get along with all of the coaches,” he added. “The campus is nice and all of the people are nice.”
