Jacksonville, Fla.--One of the top quarterback prospects in the country for the 2018 class, athletic Joey Gatewood committed to the Auburn Tigers in December and was back on the Plains recently for the annual A-Day game at Jordan-Hare Stadium
Paying close attention to the play of quarterbacks Jeremy Johnson, Sean White and John Franklin while also spending plenty of time talking with Coaches Gus Malzahn and Rhett Lashlee, Gatewood said it was great to be back at Auburn once again.
“It was the perfect atmosphere like the first time I was there, but this time it was for a spring game,” Gatewood said. “I love being up there, it’s perfect. I watched the QB’s and I still think I can fit the offense perfectly. It’s going to be crazy when I get there in two years.”
Even though Auburn’s offense struggled at times against a defense that is continuing to improve, Gatewood has seen it enough to know it works and works well with the right guy running the show. That’s what he was thinking as he was watching Saturday’s game he noted.
“I was already picturing myself in the offense,” Gatewood said. “It’s perfect there. It’s home.”
While schools from all over continue to make a strong push for him, including Florida State, Gatewood said Auburn remains very much the place for him right now in large part because of his relationship with Lashlee. Building a strong bond since his freshman season, Gatewood said the two are closer than ever and that’s why he continues to be all Auburn as he heads into the spring.
“It feels like he’s just a friend,” Gatewood said. “I get along with him so well, but he’s a coach. I’m stuck to him. I dig him.
“It’s as strong as it can be,” he added of his commitment. “110 percent.”
