McCalla, Ala.--One of the top athletes in Alabama for the 2017 class, four-star Malcolm Askew made an extended visit to Auburn for the week and finished it off with Big Cat Weekend on Saturday. Enjoying his time on the Plains getting to know the coaches and players, Askew said the trip couldn’t have gone any better for him as he committed to the Tigers.
“I have been in the process for a long time. Coming this week and getting a feel for the campus and walking around and hanging with the players, basically meeting everyone on the team, basically that just confirmed everything I needed to know.
"I was pretty sure I knew where I wanted to go back when I made the visits and talked with Coach McGriff and Coach Steele back in January. Just spending this whole week with the Auburn staff was great. That confirmed what I needed to know.”
Capable of playing either side of the ball on the next level, Askew said Auburn is recruiting him to play defense and that likely means cornerback, but safety is also an option. That means playing for Coach Wesley McGriff, someone Askew said he’s excited about working with the former NFL assistant in the future and also playing for Kevin Steele.
“I knew once Coach Steele got over here and once I met Coach Crime," Askew said of when Auburn was his team. "I knew then once I made that visit and met the new staff and talked to Coach (Gus) Malzahn. He made sure I was a top priority. It was the same feeling back when Coach Richt had the coaching staff back at Georgia.”
Even though Askew has known for quite a while that Auburn was his school, he said that he didn't give much of a hint that a decision was coming on Saturday. That made it a surprise for the staff, who Askew said tackled him out of excitement when he announced.
“Actually I gave them an idea during the week that I may do it, but I didn’t really tell them until that moment. Coach Malzahn was kind of shocked. It was a good deal.”
Still planning on visiting several schools outside the region officially, including Cal, Oregon, TCU and Oklahoma, Askew said he's solidly committed to the Tigers and is ready to start recruiting other guys like Cam Akers and Will Ignont to join him on the Plains.
I’m excited because I know a lot of guys have been waiting to see where I was going to go. Talking with everybody I feel like we’re going to land some big targets.
“I’m very excited," he said about getting it done. "It’s stress relief. It has been crazy for me, but I felt at home this week.”
