Tampa, Fla.--One of the top running back prospects in the country, four-star Devan Barrett from Tampa Catholic, has already visited the Auburn Tigers multiple times. On Wednesday he plans to be back on the Plains to check out Coach Gus Malzahn’s program.
With Auburn’s need at the running back position in the 2017 class, Barrett is one of top targets for the Tigers. He said because of that he is already very well versed in the Auburn program and especially running backs coach Tim Horton.
“It’s just about getting around and wanting to see the campus a couple more times,” Barrett said of his upcoming visit. “It’s about getting to know the coaches more. I know Coach Horton well and talk to him every day.
“He’s a great coach and a great guy. He’s cool to be around, a funny dude. When I get up there it’s about getting out with the players and getting to know them. All in all, it’s about having a great visit.”
With junior Roc Thomas transferring out of the program this summer and Jovon Robinson heading into his senior season, Auburn’s need for a true tailback is something that is definitely on Barrett’s mind as he continues to come closer to a decision.
“It plays a real big part,” Barrett said. “That’s all I’m looking for is an opportunity to play early and show my talent and hopefully start during the season. Just having the opportunity to play at a prestigious college like that would just be amazing.”
Devan Barrett is a four star prospect.
Along with Auburn, Barrett is also scheduled to visit Florida State, North Carolina and Tennessee while on the road. Planning for a decision before the start of his senior season, he said right now the goal is just to continue to learn more about the schools on his list throughout the summer.
“I would at least have a Top 10 or Top 15 by the end of the summer once I get around to all of the colleges to see what I like and what’s out there for me,” Barrett said. “I’ll probably have my decision by the start of the season.”
