Stafford, Tex.--One of the top wide receiver prospects in the country, four-star Hezekiah Jones was committed to the Baylor Bears, but has since backed off that decision. Now with a top eight list of Auburn Tigers, Alabama, California, Houston, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Oregon and Texas A&M, Jones was on the Plains over the weekend to check out the Tigers for the first time and liked what he saw from Coach Gus Malzahn’s program.
“This was my first visit down there and I like it a lot,” Jones said. “It’s just the environment. Me being from Texas, you really don’t know about Auburn that much. Coming down to visit was cool. I liked it a lot.
“It was beautiful and I loved the environment,” he added. “The team, you can bond with them very easily. They’re not stuck up or anything. I like them a lot.”
Making the trip with good friend and fellow four-star prospect Kellen Mond, Jones said he had a good idea of what to expect at Auburn after getting plenty of background from the talented quarterback.
“He spoke very highly of Auburn because he’s been there two times before this time,” Jones said. “He had been there and knows the ropes around there. He said he likes it a lot. He said it’s beautiful and it really is.”
Solidly in his top eight list of schools following the visit, Auburn is definitely on the way up but Jones said it’s still too early to tell how things will shake out.
“I’m trying to narrow down the list now,” Jones said. “I just released my top eight two days ago. Most definitely I had to get down there to see it for myself. I had heard good things about it, but I had to see it for myself really.
“I have to finish taking my visits before I narrow it down again to a top four,” Jones said. “Really I’m just keeping all my options open and getting their insight.”
Saying that Auburn is a college he wants to visit again in the fall, Jones plans to visit Alabama before heading home.
